Anne LaBastille
I have several books by Anne LaBastille that I would like to get autographed if
there's a way. Any of you know her? Know where she lives now? Is she in the
phone book? (Not in the online one I checked.) If I could contact her and ask
if she's ammenable to a very brief visit to sign autographs, it would be
great to do it while I'm up there in the next few weeks. Thanks for any help.~~ eArThworm <http://trailjournals.com/earthworm>

She is likely retired as the lady is close to 70. I have not heard of any public appearances for some time now. She used to give talks around the north country but none I am aware of recently.
You may try getting in touch through the publisher of her last book. If she is making public appearances the publisher would know. I am not quite sure how else you would go about it.

Anne self publishes. Write to her in Westport, New York. Just send it to Westport. Not a very big town, she'll get it.
She still does book signings. You missed the annual signing of Anne and other authors in Old Forge this summer.
edit: If you haven't read "Mama Poc", you should. It's her best book. Written with a passion that comes through her writing. The Woodswoman series pale in comparison.
Anne values her privacy. She is friendly but has always protected her private life. Before you try to see her, please write.

My godparents were her neighbors for years in Wadhams. While I never met her, they have told me she is a nice person. Definitely write to her first, though. From what I understand, she has had trouble with intrusions of a different nature in the past.

Done.
Yes, I've read "Mama Poc" and every other book and major article she's ever written. I got a letter off to Westport today. We'll see what happens. Hoping for a miracle. ~~ eArThworm

I also have enjoyed reading Anne's books.I have all of them and have been lucky to have three pre-autographed when I purchased them in places like Hoss's General Store in Long Lake and the Mountaineer in Keene.I have always admired her life and love for the environment and the future of our beloved adirondacks. But, I have never had the oppurtunity to have met her in person. If anybody does find out where and when she may make an appearance, please let us all know on a seperate thread.
Thanks,

Anyone interested in an extra copy of May 1975 National Geographic that has Anne LaBastille's article 'My Backyard, the Adirondacks' ? I have two and don't need both. There are beautiful color photos that aren't in any of her books. send me an email.

I too love her books, especially "Woodswoman". I haven't read "mama poc" but I will have to pick it up. I was always curious what the real name of Black Bear Lake was (or where Hawk Hill or the town of Serene were). I definately want to respect her privacy and don't think this is the appropriate place for that disclosure unless it is public knowledge what lake it is. Is there anyway to know?

Adirondack Authors
The Adirondack Reader bookstore in Inlet is having a Adirondack author book signing on Saturday September 8th from 1:00 until 4:00. You may find her there. I know Jay O'Hern and I will be there.

Unusual Meeting.
It was around 1977 and I was working as a floor covering salesmen at Floor Masters in Glensfalls NY. One slow night when I was working a women came in. She was ruggedly attractive, wearing old jeans, T shirt and hiking boots. I approached her asking her if she needed help finding something. At this point I was curious but clueless as to who she was. She explained to me that she needed an all-weather carpet that was tough yet light enough to load in canoe and paddle across a lake. At this point I put 2&2 together and recalled reading an article in ADK life or the news paper about this women who wrote a book called the "Woods Women". The article described that she lived across a lake in a camp that could only be reached by boat or canoe. This had to be her. I bluntly asked her if she as Anne La Bastille. She was a little hesitent at first to tell me. I guess she figured I was'nt a stalker and I was safe. Eventually she introduced her self and we had this amazing conversation about the Adirondack's and the environment. I sold her a carpet and loaded it in her truck and we both went on out way. I was in my early twenties at the time.

Redoak,
How lucky you are to have met Anne...I always wanted to talk to her...there are`nt too many people out there with her education and perserverance in protecting our environment...but, through the years...some people who just will never understand her ideaologies toward the environment, want to harass her and other stupid things...I don`t blame her one bit for being careful who she tells who she is...shes been through alot...now, no one hears much about her or how shes doing...people have pushed her into seclusion of sorts(but, also, she does`nt mind living solitary amongst the quiet woods and animals) ...I miss her writings and articles...does anyone know if she has published anything in the past few years?

She's mean!
About 10 years ago I was at the monument in Newcomb enjoying the view and stretching after plowing up and down Goodnow, she pulled up RIGHT NEXT to me and I recognized her instantly, I quickly smiled and said hello. I didn’t even approach her or say another word; I just kept looking at the peaks. She then threatened to sic her dogs on me!!!! I was stunned!!! She really seems very conceited to me. Her writing isn’t very good either, I read the woodswoman books as an adolescent (as per my grandmother) and found them interesting, but not captivating. She writes as if she's the only person to have those experiences, there are many camps just like hers inside the blue line.

I am afraid I have to agree with you. My husband and I read the first book and we were impressed. We continued to read the woodswoman series and all though the books were good and well written, by the time we finished we were not as impressed with her. For a woman who prides herself on being a lone woodswoman, she had a lot of help from men. By the end of the second book she was really coming off as kind of full of herself. I think your right too that there are many camps like that in the blue line. There were things she did in the books too that made me question her devotion to ecology, like I believe she still bathes in the lake.
I do applaud all that she accomplished as a single woman, but there are many that have done just as much. I did meet her at a book signing. I was very excited and brought all my books. I was the only one there and still felt as if she was pushing me off as soon as she signed. I tried to strike up a conversation with her but she wasn't having it. There was no line and it was an advertised public appearance. So I left and then I saw her truck parked in the parking lot with her dogs in it. Now granted it was under a tree, but it was Sept and still very warm. I was worried for her dogs.
Ok, just glad to hear that it is not just us thinking things about her, lol. By the way, how many 70 year old environmentalist do you know that still have blonde pigtails, cause thats still how she wears it, lol.Comment

Like her or not, she was one of the first women to relate those kind of experiences in a way that captivated many people, she's a local icon.
I passed her on the road to "Black Bear Lake" years ago and seeing her in person after being so enthralled with her books was something I'll never forget. She's the reason I became so interested in the Adirondacks and I have no doubt others can claim the same. Which of course doesn't make her perfect but there's no denying her status as a celebrated local author and an inspiration to some.
